Solar storms produce bursts of charged particles and radiation which reach the Earth, affecting its atmosphere and modern technology.

3-MINUTE SHOWER

An emerging activity in forecasting space weather aims to mitigate its effects. Solar particles take from a few minutes to a few days to reach Earth so that spacecraft positioned between the Sun and the Earth can provide enough advance warning, at least of slower-moving events, to allow sensitive systems to be switched off or protected. Computer models of the upper atmosphere are also being developed to predict impacts.
